PLAINSWOMEN
By
Dianne Widom
In 1990, I painted my first “Plainswomen.” It was rather simple and crude compared
to the more recent ones, but it caught the attention of numerous art lovers, who found themselves identifying
with the subject. As I continue painting “Plainswomen,” the technique becomes more refined, but I always strive
to retain the original earthiness. These are women of the land and I want them to appear as one with the earth.
This technique, or style, began developing in my mind (probably my subconscious more than my conscious) for
perhaps years before that very first “Plainswomen” painting actually emerged. It wasn’t until I had painted several of
them that I became aware of the strangest sensation each time I was working on one. It seemed to me that I had
actually been there. I felt that I had actually done this. There is only one conclusion I can come to.
Surely, I must have been a plainswoman sometime in my distant past!
You may take that however you wish, but yes, I’m certain that I have indeed been a plainswoman.
